USDA NIFA-BARD PROGRAM
The memorandum of understanding between NIFA and BARD established
a framework under which USDA-NIFA and BARD “intend to cooperate to
promote collaboration among U.S. and Israeli scientists and engineers.” The
two following areas of interest were targeted to create funding programs.
FOOD AND NUTRITION
The NIFA-BARD-IIA Food and Nutrition program supports U.S. and Israeli investigators working together
with an Israeli company.
The program grants funding for joint research conducted by a consortium of Israeli and American scientists
in authorized research institutes, working with an Israeli company that aims to develop innovative food and
nutrition technologies. Allocations for this program were made in 2021 for a 5-year period.
The first seven grant recipients were announced in December 2022.
This program runs in partnership with the IIA
AQUACULTURE AND DESERT FARMING
The program funds studies that promote the understanding of biological and ecological systems related to
fish, algae and seafood. It will also support desert farming research focused on management of agricultural
production under desert conditions, with the overall objective of promoting sustainable and climate-smart
agriculture.
In this program, Israeli scientists join U.S. scientists working on USDA NIFA-funded projects to enhance the
research for bilateral and local benefit.
Allocations for this program were made in 2022 for a 5-year period.
The first grant recipients will be announced in the first half of 2023.
This program runs in partnership with the Chief Scientist Office
at the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development 14
