Research Interests

Most of my current research is problem-oriented but I encourage learning from basic science as the real pathway for development of novel solutions.

·         Post-harvest issues of grapes: decay and stem browning

·         Pre-harvest factors influencing postharvest disorders

·         Volatilome of table grapes and it’s association to flavor

·         Disinfection technologies of fruit and vegetables

The evolution of my scientific career follows a Darwinian path: MSc on viruses, PhD on bacteria, postdoc on fungi, as a researcher on fruits and now a significant part is spent on/with humans. The PhD was on production of cytokinins by Pantoea agglomerans (former name Erwinia herbicola) with Prof Barash and Dr Manulis in Tel Aviv University and the Volcani center. After receiving the Vaadia postdoctoral fellowship, I worked on fungal signaling with Prof Mills in Oregon State University, Corvallis and later with Prof Ciuffetti on chromosomal structure of Pyernofora tritici-repentis. I joined the Department of Postharvest Science at the Volcani Center on 1998 and worked on postharvest problems of grapes, tomato, lithi and recently dates. I became the head of the department in 2010 and the head of the Institute of Postharvest and Food Science in 2016. My main recent scientific achievement is elucidating the response of grape berries to low O2/high CO2 storage conditions exposing the volatiles and genes responsible for the after taste as well as the cold induced induction of the phenyl propanoid pathway and the production of beneficial metabolites.
